Den site; according to the awesome new wolf reference book we've acquired, wolves like to situate their dens near water, because the alpha female needs a lot of liquid while she's pregnant & nursing. They also like placing their dens under hard surfaces such as trees and rocks so that predators such as bears cannot dig up their puppies and kill them.

This den is on the edge of a forest by the shore of a lake and isn't the most hidden place, but considering the size of the pack that protects it, most bears would stay away. The Foxtail pack has a habit of leaving more than one nanny to guard the den. The nannies of the pack are Weaselfur and Sandstorm.

Wolves get the job of nanny by sucking up to the alphas while the alpha female is going into heat, trying to impress them. Why they do it is obvious; you don't have to risk your neck getting food if the rest of the pack brings it. A nanny wolf (yes, that is a real wolf term) job is to guard and teach the pups. Pretty sweet job, so long as you don't get visited by a predator like a grizzly too often. Nannies also have to look out for birds of prey, coyotes and basically anything that might pose a threat to the pack's young. It's a very important role.

You're welcome, I love my new wolf ref book. :aww: It's already proven very helpful, especially since we want to portray the wolf society in the story as accurately as possible, since there are a lot of misconceptions floating around about the species. :)

Yeah, I know... I actually want mind to be as close to 'reality' as I can get it, but it's hard finding the info... Fortunately it'll be a while before the actual wolves will appear :D

Yeah, there's definately a shortage of good wolf information. I can give you the name of the reference book I use if you want. :)
